Principal's Message

First, I would like to welcome you all to an exciting school year! I am Karen Nixon, the campus principal here at G.W. Carver Early Education Center.  It is a pleasure to continue to serve the students and parents in the 2021-2022 school year.  As I start my 29th year in education, I continue to be excited to work with young children. I believe the best students come to Carver.

Although I have several years of experience at the secondary level, there is nothing more exciting than watching those early learners in the school environment. Their excitement for learning serves as a great motivator for me year after year. I am also fortunate to work with a great staff who bring many years of early childhood experience. I get to see their passion for teaching new learners new skills daily.

This year we will focus on the social development of the students as well as their cognitive development. Social-emotional learning is important because a child has to have the ability to understand his/her feelings and the feelings of others. For many students, this is their first time around this many children at once, so we have to teach them how to get along with other children and how to build relationships. As great as last year was, I believe this year will be even better. To do this, we must have your help and your continued support.

The district set a goal last year that 75% of LISD students make 1.5 years’ growth. Well, due to the student’s hard work, great teachers, and parent support, Carver students were able to meet that goal with 75% of our students achieving 1.5 years’ growth. I encourage you to read to your child daily and to ask them about their school day.  We have several goals this year and we know with your support we will achieve them.

∙         That our students master the skills to be kindergarten ready
∙         That our daily attendance will increase to at least 96%
∙         That every student can write his/her first and last name
∙         That students demonstrate the character traits of responsibility, respect, fairness, citizenship, caring, sharing, and trustworthiness

Having a LockHeart for People is one of my greatest assets, therefore I look forward to the relationships that will be developed this school year through our partnership! I am looking forward to an amazing school year. If you have any questions or concerns, the best way to contact me is at karen.nixon@lockhart.txed.net.
